Drawing Compression

As Support has been made aware of this week via our team members, ProjectSight's lack of compression of files uploaded into the drawings module can lead to a severe drop in performance in drawings. We had a project where the drawings provided to us were ~330 MB each, and this resulted in 30+ second (at best) page loads between sheets, because ProjectSight retains the original files instead of reducing their size (as competitive systems do) after uploading.

Smaller files are much faster to upload, so you could make the case that the most efficient workflow for drawings management is to compress drawing files using Bluebeam's (or other) "Reduce File Size" feature and then upload the drawings, but some users might not have access to that, or not even know that it is possible.

With that, I think Trimble should offer the following as a solution to this potential issue that users might face. FYI, drawing performance is the #1 complaint I hear about ProjectSight.

  • Portfolio & Project Settings to automatically compress uploaded drawings with a good compromise between legibility and performance (chosen by Trimble) to hit your performance goals, which should meet or exceed PlanGrid. PlanGrid's performance seems to be in-part because they aggressively compress whatever you give them, as is evident in the much lower resolution of drawings on their platform vs. ProjectSight.

PlanGrid set the bar in terms of performance, and it's what everyone is familiar with, and some choose to use even when they have access to ProjectSight, because it doesn't match up today, possibly only because of large file sizes that have been uploaded into the system.

  • Update the user manual with note about this option and alternative solutions that offer more control over compression, such as Bluebeam's "Reduce File Size".

  • Attach files
