Allow Multiple Companies in Default Sharing for New Records Merged

We do a lot of Joint Venture jobs with multiple companies who should see all records by default. Currently, we are limited to the company that "owns" the project. We would like to add the Joint Venture partner companies as well so that users from different companies see records by default.
