Allow Submittal Numbers to be Edited

Submittal numbers should be able to be edited or not required: When we import a submittal log and change the status to open, the submittal number is auto generated and the submittal number is locked and not editable. When setting up a submittal log, you typically arrange submittals by spec section, but that is definitely not the way you submit them. A structural steel submittal within section 05 12 00 may be submitted prior to 03 30 00 concrete due to lead times. In this scenario, we would want the structural steel submittal to be submittal #1 and the 03 30 00 to be submittal #2. We are unable to distinguish the order of the submittals prior to the project start because we don't know what subs will submit before others and if we need to add a submittal that we may have missed. We want the submittal # to go in order of the way they are officially submitted and to do that they must be editable or blank.

Being able to renumber any unlocked record would be useful. I wouldn't stop at submittals. If they can add this feature, it should be added everywhere.

We do the following, and it has worked well for us:

    1. We renamed Submittals to Submittal Register, since most of our users came from Prolog and that was the previous terminology.

    2. The Submittal Register is built at the beginning of the project, and we number all items as Spec Section + A, B, C, etc. For example, if we need to submit product data and shop drawings, we would have two items, say 26 00 00A and 26 00 00B, and so on. The number on the items in the Submittal Register is arbitrary and doesn't really matter.

    3. As we receive items and submit them for review, we create Submittal Packages, and add the relevant items from Register into the Package. The Package number is created in order and makes for simple tracking. You can also create submittal package and item revisions throughout the review process, right from the Submittal Package, so numbering for re-submittals is fairly simple.

The only downside to this is that Submittal Packages aren't currently available on Mobile, so you have to view everything by the Register Item number.
