Enable a field to have a default value of another field

We at times need a standard or custom field to default to a value of another field on the same record. For example, we created a Contract Amount field and want it to always default to the Applied Amount (Bdgt) amount. So similar to how you can set a Date to be Today or Today +7 etc, enable us to enter the {field name} and that value will default or if you don't use { you enter the constant.
